The rich mosaic of the English countryside has a fascinating fourth dimension: layer upon layer of history, visible in traces left by the continuous succession of hundreds of generations. This book puts into sharp focus one small part of that countryside, the ancient Somerset parish of Publow, about seven miles south of Bristol.

As a topographical history, it is primarily about places - fields and houses, etc - but inevitably it also tells some of the stories of the people and families who have been associated with these places over the centuries.

For anyone who likes exploring the countryside, the many footpaths in the old parish of Publow (which includes most of Pensford and Woollard) make much of this history still observable, or imaginable. Such exploration on foot offers an engrossing return to the days when a person's parish was pretty much their world. It was far from being the collection of anonymous, boring fields it might appear to be today. A wide variety of topography and semi-natural vegetation could flourish in the age which preceded agricultural mechanisation.

A sense of place would be enhanced by shared oral histories and legends relating to all kinds of specific and special areas. This is why place names and field names can be so ancient and so revealing, and this is also why they are considered at some length in the main text, place by place.

Note, this book only refers to the old parish of Publow (which excluded part of the modern village of Pensford and the part of Woollard which lies in the parish of Compton Dando). To help visitors to enjoy such days out exploring, some basic information about local pubs, and pointers to sources for information about transport and accommodation has been added (see page 92).

Some of the local footpaths are shown on the map on page iii, but walkers should get the Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 155, which shows all the rights of way, and access to neighbouring parishes. The text is based on Publow Field Names, which was published in 1988. It has been amended, and expanded, and an index of people's names has been added, with references to the properties they owned or leased (for the benefit of family historians). The map on page iii gives an indication of the area of Pensford and Belluton which was transferred from Stanton Drew Parish to Publow Parish in 1947.

The main justification for publishing lies in the excellence of some of the 18th and 19th century sources used, in particular the maps of 1776 and 1806, from which selected details are reproduced. The 1839/1840 Tithe Map is also an excellent source, and its numbering sequence has been adopted here for the reference numbers of all the plots (houses or fields) in the main text and gazetteer. Throughout the text the T numbers (eg T7, T85) refer to the plot numbers on the 1839 Tithe Map. An A to Z style copy of the Tithe Map is appended as a six page indexed supplement to the text.

A few introductory paragraphs cover some of the more general topics, and a few more are added under the final paragraph Miscellaneous by directing the reader to the relevant Tithe numbers in the main text.
